With election time close by, Election Commission of India, in consultation with Department of Electronics, will finalise a special mobile application to help smartphone users apply for registration of their names in the electoral rolls.
Talking to Millennium Post, Chief electoral officer of Delhi, Vijay Dev said, ‘The idea would be futuristic as the number of smartphone users is increasing day by day. We want the voter registration be made as easy as possible for the people as the current system is non-friendly and tedious.’
Similarly, electorate accessing google maps for various poll-related information, such as location of polling booth and checking their names in the electoral rolls is also on the anvil.
The national capital is all set to become the first state to have the facility and Dev is hoping that things will be work out before next Delhi assembly election slated to be held in December next year.
According to Dev, Google maps provide high-resolution aerial images of urban areas and the idea is to give information to voters through it.
The mobile application will help people apply for registration of their names in electoral rolls in a hassle-free way as while applying online, young people often find it difficult to fill up the required information such as name of their constituency and sub-division.
Welcoming the move, a renowned cyber law expert Pavan Duggal said, ‘The idea is very good. This is the way of the future to attract more and more voters in the country. Although, the government would have to create awareness among the people to use this application, I appreciate it. The challenge will be to get non-smartphone users to use this application’.
‘We are taking a number of initiatives to encourage the youths to enroll their names in the electoral rolls. There will be a special icon on the Google map identifying location of the voter registration centres. Anybody clicking on the icon will get all the relevant details,’ said Dev.
In total in Delhi, there are 11,594 polling stations.
In the mobile application, electorate will need to punch in their names and residence address and all the other required information, such as name of the constituency and sub-division will automatically come up in the relevant boxes.
On the other hand, criticising the step, social activist VK Gupta said, ‘This step is for high-end people only and government would neglect middle class and poor people. Voters are maximum from these two classes and not the upper class, therefore the percentage of voting would hardly increase.’
Meanwhile, Chief electoral office, Delhi, will have a fresh drive for comprehensive revision of electoral rolls with draft publication of electoral rolls begin in the city on 15 October and final publication of electoral rolls on 10 January 2013.
The chief electoral officer said people will be able to file claims and objections till 14 November. The objective of this exercise is to update the electoral roll by including the names of the eligible citizens who will attain the age of 18 years or more on 1 January, 2013 and to delete the names of non-existent electors due to death, shifting etc.
The disposal of claims and objections will be completed by 15 December while updating of database and printing of supplementary lists will take place between 15 and 28 December.
