US Apple’s iPhone explodes inside grade 8 girl’s pocket, causes burns

The girl, who has not been named, received the burns on the thigh and back when her iPhone started smouldering in her pocket.

The girl, a student at the Middle School of the Kennebunks in Maine was treated at a hospital on Friday. The classroom had to be vacated when the girl said her pants were burning after she sat down and heard a pop, principal Jeffrey Rodman was quoted by the New York Daily News as saying.
Rodman said the student quickly raced to the corner and took off her pants.

The student was then treated for minor burns and was expected to return to school soon. Rodman said the girl's pants had multiple burn holes and there was so much smoke in the room that a window had to be opened. He said the cause of the phone's explosion is under investigation by the state Fire Marshall.

Earlier, Apple announced the record sales of iPhone and iPad which pushed its revenue to $57.6 billion in the first quarter of FY14 but its profits remained flat amid fierce competition in the mobile handset market.

Its revenue in the second quarter is also expected to be lower in $42-44 billion range. The California-based tech giant reported a flat net profit of $13.1 billion for the quarter ended 28 December, 2013 compared to the same period in the previous year, while revenue grew 5.6 per cent from $54.5 billion in Q1 FY’13. International sales accounted for 63 per cent of the quarter’s revenue.

iPhones sales stood at an all-time quarterly record of 51 million units (compared to 47.8 million in the year-ago quarter), while iPads sales stood at 26 million (from 22.9 million).

Meanwhile, arch rival S Korean Samsung slashes Galaxy Gear price

South Korean electronics giant Samsung has slashed the Galaxy Gear price for the second time in India to Rs 15,290 to bolster the sagging sales of the smartwatch. The company had launched the wearable computing device in India last September for Rs 22,990. Last month, it reduced the price to Rs 19,075. ‘To spur increased demand, the price of the Galaxy Gear is now Rs 15,290,’ a Samsung India spokesperson said. The device is compatible with the the company’s range — S3, S4, S4 Mini, Note 2, Note 3 and Grand 2, the spokesperson added. Data on Galaxy Gear sales in India was not available. In November, Samsung had said it had sold 8 lakh units globally since the launch in September. Galaxy Gear works with Samsung smartphone and tablets powered by Android 4.3 (Jelly Bean) operating system. It has a 1.6-inch Super AMOLED touchscreen surrounded by stainless steel. It is powered by 800MHz processor and 512MB RAM, and has 4GB internal storage. Along with a speaker and mic, the smartwatch has a 1.9MP camera. The smartwatch can be used to make and receive phone calls, read text messages and emails, track workouts and capture photos and videos.
