Loic Remy scored the only goal of the game in the 13th minute of the early kick-off match when, played in by Yoan Gouffran, he rounded Spurs keeper Brad Friedel before producing a composed finish.
But that the Magpies, fresh from beating Chelsea, took all three points from this trip to north London owed much to a brilliant display by Dutch shot-stopper Krul, who produced a hatful of excellent saves.
The best was arguably when, going the wrong way after Gylfi Sigurdsson’s free-kick took a huge deflection, Krul clawed the ball away before combining with Newcastle defender Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa to clear Younes Kaboul’s follow-up off the line. Victory saw Newcastle go ninth in the table and left them just three points adrift of Spurs, who remained in sixth place.
Manchester City suffered their fourth Premier League defeat of the season as Sunderland’s revival under Gus Poyet gathered pace.
Phil Bardsley scored the only goal in the first half when he shrugged off James Milner and curled in a low shot. City dominated thereafter but were thwarted by a well-organised Sunderland defence and goalkeeper Vito Mannone.
Sergio Aguero headed wide from close range and had a shot palmed away by Mannone as the Black Cats held on. It was the Black Cats’ third win in four games in all competitions and Poyet’s third in as many home games since he succeeded Paolo Di Canio as manager.
In just over a month at the helm, the Uruguayan appears to have instilled a confidence.
