Severely annoyed with his son’s drinking habit, a 53-year-old man allegedly hacked him to death at their residence in south-east Delhi’s Sangam Vihar on late Sunday evening. The accused has been arrested and the weapon used in the act has also been recovered.
On Sunday, after indulging into a fight with his son, identified as Munawwar (30), the accused Mohammad Ismail picked up a billboard lying in a corner of the room and attacked him on the neck. Munawwar collapsed and fell on the floor but his father continued to attack him.
Ismail who is a tailor by profession, initially fled from the spot after the murder but was later arrested by the police. He told the cops that despite several instructions and threats, his son did not change his habit.
On Saturday, he returned home drunk at around 9.45 pm and he did the same on Sunday.
“As soon as Munawwar reached home from the embroidery shop in the area where he used to work, Ismail began scolding him. That led to an argument which soon turned into a scuffle between the duo,” a police official said.
Munawwar lived with his parents, brother, wife and two children. Police said initial probe has revealed that Munawwar was an alcoholic and fight with his family over his drinking habits was the order of the day.
“The worst rebuke came from his father and wife whenever he returned home from work in an inebriated state. Munawwar would fight with them each time and even indulged in physical violence sometimes,” said a police officer.
His wife moved to her parents’ home with her children a few weeks ago when she could tolerate his behaviour any longer and ended up indulging in an ugly fight with him. A case under the sections of murder has been registered against Ismail.
