UPSC prelims today; SC rejects plea seeking stay

The Supreme Court on Saturday refused to postpone the UPSC preliminary examination, scheduled to take place on Sunday. While rejecting the plea of rescheduling the examination, a bench headed by Justice Jagdish Singh Khehar said: ‘Nine lakh students are ready to appear in the exam and it cannot be postponed.’

‘You raised only questions on comprehension part that has already been removed and the defect has been remedied,’ he told the petitioner. Earlier, a section of students had demanded to scrap the Civil Services Aptitude Test (CSAT), terming the English comprehension test in the preliminary examination discriminatory towards non-English speaking candidates. The CSAT, of which the English section is a part, was introduced in 2011.

With the increasing number of protests, the NDA government has decided that the marks of the English Language Comprehension Skills, asked in second paper of civil services (preliminary) examination, will not be included for gradation. Later, the UPSC came out with the decision asking candidates to leave the questions unanswered as the section will not have any bearing on the merit list due to non-evaluation. ‘The maximum marks for Paper II would be ‘200 minus the marks earmarked for the English language comprehension skills (Class X level),’ the UPSC said in a release. The English comprehension skills section carries 22.5 marks.
