In a bid to complete major ongoing flood projects in UP in time, irrigation minister in Akhilesh government Shivpal Singh Yadav has demanded a special flood control package of Rs 1,000 crore from the central government.
Yadav, while participating in 16th meeting of Ganga flood control board (GFCD) said that about 74 lakh hectare area of Uttar Pradesh was still being affected by floods every year which was 21 per cent of total flood affected area in the country.
In UP only 22 lakh hectare area has been covered by the flood controlling measures. The state government has planned construction of embankments in 5,000 km length by the end of 12th Five-Year Plan.
In current fiscal the UP state government has allocated Rs 350 crore for the flood projects aided by Centre while the central government itself have released only Rs 41.38 crore which was quite insufficient. The Centre has approved other six flood projects for which Rs 343.98 crore were still to be released, he said.
In a meeting, expressing disappointment over the rights of state government in releasing funds for flood projects, PWD minister Yadav said, in present the state has right to release only Rs 12.50 crore for flood projects which was quite insufficient and this limit must be raised up to Rs 26 crore before next rainy season starts.
MULAYAM FLAYS UP GOVT AGAIN
For the second time in four days, Samajwadi Party supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav on Thursday expressed unhappiness over functioning of the government led by his son Akhilesh, and asked those in responsible positions to focus on ‘public interest’ rather than ‘self interest’.
