Annoyed with the lethargic attitude of officials in several departments regarding filing of replies in court cases, the state government has directed them to speed up the exercise and accomplish the task by the end of this month failing which action would be taken against them.
Sources said the Chief Secretary’s office and the monitoring (Justice department) cell would constantly review the progress of the filing of the replies as the officials have been asked to get in touch with them.
The state government is perturbed by the increasing number of pending cases mainly those of contempt of court. During the last six months, the Court had summoned almost a dozen officials of the rank of secretary and principal secretary to appear before them in personal in contempt cases.
‘The summoning of senior bureaucrats not only gives a bad impression about the government but also affects the functioning of the departments concerned,’ observed the Chief Secretary during a review meeting of the pending cases in the court. He told the secretaries and principal secretaries that it was their responsibility to ensure that counter-affidavits were filed timely to save the embarrassment of senior officials.
The fresh directives have been issued to file counter-affidavits and produce other desired documents before the courts. Though several departments are yet to work in full steam some others have started serious implementation of the directives.
