UP DIG says girl should be shot for eloping

A Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of police in Uttar Pradesh landed in a controversy when he told a complainant, who had come to lodge a missing complaint about his sister, that had the DIG been in his place, he would have shot her for allegedly eloping with a man.

‘A fact-finding inquiry will be conducted into the alleged remarks of DIG, Saharanpur, S K Mathur and a report will also be sought from the IG in this regard,’ Additional Director of Police (Law and Order) Jagmohan Yadav told reporters in Lucknow. He said that Mathur has denied having made the remarks on Tuesday.

Yadav said, ‘If such a thing has been said, then further action will be taken,’ noting that it was a serious issue in the wake of honour killing incidents in the area. ‘If something like this has been said by a senior officer, then it is wrong, as people come to police with expectation,’ he said.

‘The DIG has stated that during an inspection of police station, some 200-250 people came to meet him [on Tuesday] and informed him about [the girl missing],’ Yadav said.

‘The DIG said that he sympathetically heard the problem of the people and got a case lodged. He said that the people later left satisfied,’ he said.

The girl, had married a youth and had filed an application in the court, Yadav said, adding, ‘she intended to live with the youth she married and her family members
were threatening her’.
