Former Haryana minister Gopal Goyal Kanda, in judicial custody for his alleged role in the Geetika Sharma suicide case, on Friday failed to appear before a Delhi court due to his ill-health.
Kanda could not be produced on Friday before Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate D K Jangala on expiry of his judicial custody which was extended till 2 November.
The court was informed by jail authorities that the former minister was indisposed and has been shifted to jail hospital.
Meanwhile, his co-accused and employee Aruna Chaddha was brought to the court and she too was remanded to judicial custody till 2 November.
46-year-old Kanda, also the owner of private firm MDLR, was earlier hospitalised in August following complaints of high blood pressure.
Both Kanda and Chaddah have been accused of abetting the suicide of former air hostess Geetika Sharma.
Geetika was found dead on 5 August at her Ashok Vihar residence in North West Delhi. In her 4 August suicide note, the 23-year-old victim had said she was ending her life due to ‘harassment’ by Kanda and Chaddha.
The Delhi police has chargesheeted the duo for allegedly committing offences under section 306 (abetment of suicide), 120 B (criminal conspiracy), 506 (criminal intimidation), 201 (destruction of evidence), 467 (forgery of valuable security), 468 (forgery with intention to cheat), 469 (forgery with intention to harm reputation) and 471 (using forged documents as genuine) of the Indian Penal Code.
They have also been booked under section 66 of the Information Technology Act which deals with hacking of computers.
FORMER MINISTER GRANTED BAIL IN BOUNCED CHEQUE CASE
Former Haryana minister Gopal Goyal Kanda was granted bail by a Delhi court in a case of ignoring warrants issued against him in a 14-year-old bounced cheque case, said an order sheet made available Friday. Gopal Kanda and his brother Govind Kanda faced summons and then warrants by the Delhi court over a 1998 case when a Rs 4 lakh cheque issued by Gopal Kanda had bounced. The two had failed to appear in court. Additional sessions judge Neena Bansal Krishna on 16 October granted bail to Gopal Kanda on a personal bond of Rs 25,000 with one surety of the like amount for ignoring warrants in the bounced cheque case.
However, Gopal Kanda would remain in jail as his judicial custody was extended by another city court Friday till 2 November in a case of abetting the suicide of former air hostess Geetika Sharma.
A Delhi court on 10 October extended till 31 October the interim bail of Govind Kanda, co-accused and brother of Gopal Kanda, in the cheque case. Govind Kanda was granted interim bail on 10 September on a personal bond of Rs 10,000 and a surety of the same amount. On the direction of a court, Gopal Kanda and his brother Govind, were declared proclaimed offenders for ignoring the warrants in the cheque-bounce case, which they settled out of court. Police had registered a case against the two brothers for avoiding the court's warrants.
