Unmukt Chand, the overnight cricket hero turned heartthrob after his team’s victory in the Under-19 Cricket World Championship, made it a point to meet all his teachers just before the Teachers’ Day at Modern School, Barakhamba Road, on Monday.
Before he could even meet the principal, his visit’s news spread like wildfire in the school.
Chand visited all staff rooms, touched their feet and said, ‘This victory wouldn’t have been possible had my teachers not blessed me and prayed for me. All my teachers cooperated with me while I was away playing.’
Chand said he shares a special bond with Lata Vaidyanathan, the principal of the school, who encouraged him in all walks of life and supported him for his training when he missed his classes.
Chand, who was coached by Naveen Chopra at the school, was all praise for him.
‘When I was demotivated for a poor performance with the Delhi Daredevils in the IPL trophy, it was Firoz sir, who spoke to me and asked me to play the first few balls with a mind as cool as a cucumber,’ said an exuberant Chand.
The star cricketer didn’t forget Bina Ramanujam and Malini Khatri, his English teachers and Cimren Kher, the psychology teacher. When asked whether he would walk into the shoes of Gautam Gambhir, he added that he wasn’t in any hurry to be a part of the national cricket team, as his priority right now was the tour to New Zealand.
