A few hours before the Republic Day parade, body of an unidentified youth was discovered inside a kiosk near the Vayu Sena Bhawan and Udyog Bhawan buildings in the heavily protected New Delhi district around 4 am on Monday.
The kiosk is hardly 100 metres away from Rajpath and the entire area was placed under a seven-layer security ring for US President Barack Obama’s visit as the chief guest on Republic Day.
There were around 50,000 security personnels – from agencies that include US Security Service, Navy SEAL, Indian Army, paramilitary forces and Delhi Police (guarding the outer-most layer) – deployed in the area.
The deceased person is reportedly aged around 20 years and it emerged that he was working on the shop for the past few days. However, no mobile phone or documents were recovered from the spot, from which his identity could be established. Till Monday evening, the police were yet to question the owner of the kiosk, said a source.
The body had several injury marks in it – with one mark on the head suggesting forceful blow by a blunt object – and it was immediately sent for postmortem examination. It was discovered by an official of the Bomb Disposal Squad when he was doing the last round of checking. As per instructions of the authorities, no shops in the area were allowed to remain open since Saturday.
A chunk of concrete was found near the body, which could be a portion of the ceiling that fell on the youth and led to his death. However, probability of foul play hasn’t been ruled out yet, said a police official.
