Undertrial stabbed to death in Tihar

A 40-year-old undertrial at Tihar Jail was allegedly stabbed to death by three other inmates over a suspected personal enmity on Monday afternoon.

The deceased under trial, identified as Ajay, who was charged with around more than six criminal cases, was a frequent visitor at Tihar when he was out on bail for the past three years, However, he was put behind bars once again around one week ago in connection with a new case, said a police official.

The prime accused in this case was identified as Sumit (24), who along with his accomplices Rakesh and Raman, got hold of Ajay and slashed his face with a sharp object, before inflicting multiple wounds on his body. Both Ajay and Sumit belonged to south Delhi’s Khanpur area and have reportedly been old rivals, said a source.

Sumit allegedly believed that Ajay had killed his brother — which happens to be one of the cases reported against Ajay — and so he allegedly wanted to avenge his brother’s death.

Ajay was rushed to the Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital, where he was declared brought dead. A case of murder was registered at the Hari Nagar police station.

Meanwhile, Ajay’s wife told the police that she was there in the jail to meet Ajay, a few hours before he was attacked, and a man named Ramakant had threatened her in the meeting room.

Ramakant’s role in the incident was being verified by the police till Monday evening, the source added.
