Uncollected taxes quadrupled in 2008-12: CAG

The Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) Shashikant Sharma on Friday tabled the report on department of revenue taxes in Parliament.
According to the CAG report, ‘the uncollected demand increased from Rs 1,24,274 crores in financial year 2008 to Rs 4,08,418 crores in financial year 2012, of which 94 per cent was difficult to recover in Financial Year 2012’.
The report further states that the share of direct taxes in gross tax receipts increased from 38.42 per cent (Rs .83 lakh crore) in financial year 03 to 55.56 per cent (Rs 4.94 lakh crore) in financial year 2012 indicating progressive tax system.
