Unauthorised banquet halls under scanner

Farmhouses, resorts and motels, also functioning as marriage halls in the area of North Delhi Municipal Corporation, are under the scanner as the civic agency has decided to initiate action against the owners of such properties.

The Corporation has not only decided to stop such practices but also to impose <g data-gr-id="36">heavy</g> fine on the owners as ‘misuse charges’. The Corporation has said that strict action will be taken against motels for allowing marriage ceremonies in the basements by putting the life of people at stake. Notably, there are as many as 601 authorised farmhouses, resorts and motels in North Corporation area, out of which 47 are allowed to organise marriage events.

“Farmhouses and resorts in the area of Civil Lines zone and Narela zone have been allowing marriages without having permission from the civic body. Only a few of them have been authorised to rent out for marriage ceremonies, however, <g data-gr-id="38">majority</g> of them are allowing such events. The property owners are not only minting money in this way but have also erected illegal structures on the open spaces. What is worse was that <g data-gr-id="41">motels</g> have been organising events in their basement which involve risks of lives of the people.” the Corporation informed during its Standing Committee meet on Wednesday.

The Corporation, in a report, said that Civil Lines zone has 47 farmhouses while Narela zone has 519. The report said that the Corporation generated revenue of Rs 1.1 crore in the year 2012-13 which reduced to Rs 68 lakh in <g data-gr-id="29">year</g> the 2014-15. The Corporation also claimed to have served notices to 104 farmhouses but failed to reveal the action taken on them.

With the farmhouses in the Capital becoming a hotspot for the people living in the NCR region, the North MCD together with local police will take strong note of the major traffic problems and civic woes created by farmhouse marriages. “The parking needs of the people visiting the farmhouses will also have to be accommodated within the farmland,” said MP Bhardwaj, Chairman of Standing Committee of North MCD.
