The probe into the IPL spot fixing, with the arrest of three Rajasthan Royals players has opened up a Pandora’s Box, with each day revealing new rots in the system. Soon after the arrest of S Sreesanth, Ajit Chandila and Ankeet Chavan, it was said that the ‘underworld’ was involved in the spot-fixing of IPL matches. A source in Special Cell told Millennium Post how the D-Company was commanding the cricketers to spot-fix the overs by giving out signals that had earlier been decided on.
From each state, a fixer, with experience in spot fixing would be deployed. According to sources, these fixers would be in touch with other bookies who were instructed to lure the cricketers into spot fixing, by throwing them parties, organising honey traps or by some other method.
The arrest of Ramesh Vyas, a top-notch fixer, by the Mumbai Crime Branch on Saturday, has revealed the extent of the underworld’s involvement in the spot fixing. Vyas was arrested and 92 mobile phones and 18 SIM cards were seized from his possession. The source said, 30 of these mobile phones were used to make calls to Pakistan.
Vyas who hails from Gujarat, often called the father of spot-fixing and betting, used to transfer the calls from Pakistan to junior bookies. A few of them, who have already been arrested, have been identified as Chandresh alias Jupiter, Jiju Janardhan and Tinku Mandi. Members from the underworld would instruct them on how to involve the players in spot fixing and what the players were required to do. ‘Underworld members would give the bookies a written script and the bookies were asked to make the targeted players act upon the script,’ the source said.
Another senior bookie-cum-fixer—Sunil Duabi who is still absconding played a vital role in the fixing. He was the one who is in direct touch with underworld. Sources claimed that he had attended several meetings with D company as well. Sunil is also wanted in a criminal case registered against him in Mumbai. He is currently residing in Dubai.
THREE MORE HELD FOR SPOT FIXING
On Sunday, Delhi police arrested three more persons in connection to IPL spot fixing including a Ranji-level cricket player. Cops are on the look out for another former player who played for Railways.
The three arrested persons have been identified as Manish Gudewa (32), Kiran Dole (43) and Sunil Bhatiya (44). The trio was nabbed from Maharashtra’s Aurangabad city.
According to police, they used to mediate between the bookies and the players. ‘These three are fixers who arranged the meetings between the bookies and players and did the on-spot fixing during the matches,’ a Delhi police official said.
