London’s Metropolitan Police apologised on Monday to the family of a British newspaper vendor who died during demonstrations against a Group of 20 meeting in 2009. The force said it had reached an out-of-court settlement with the family of Ian Tomlinson.
Officer Simon Harwood hit Tomlinson with a baton and shoved him to the ground as the latter tried to leave a cordon put up to contain protesters. Tomlinson collapsed and died moments later.
Scotland Yard said a settlement had been reached that acknowledged the suffering which Tomlinson’s family has ‘endured with dignity’ over the last four years.
Harwood was tried and acquitted of manslaughter but was later fired after a disciplinary panel ruled his actions amounted to gross misconduct.
