University Grants Commission [UGC] has decided to provide free residential accommodation facility to SC boys and girls studying in middle school, higher secondary schools, college and universities under the Babu Jagjivan Ram ChattrawasYojna.
The primary objective of the revised scheme is to attract implementing agencies for undertaking hostel construction programme, especially for SC girls to reduce their drop out rate.
The scheme will be implemented through the state governments, union territory administrations and the central and state universities and institutions and they will be provided eligible central assistance as per provision of the scheme, both for fresh construction of hostel buildings and for expansion of the existing hostel facilities.
According to the UGC, priority should be given to areas having concentration of SC population of 20 percent and more and without adequate hostel facilities for students.Â
