After 22 years, the University Grant Commission (UGC) has decided to change the slab for educational leave, for which it has formed a committee. The panel will look into the matter of study leave for university and colleges teachers, and determination of admissibility of pay and allowances.
After 1991, the new proposal of UGC committee is looking into less reduction in salary of teachers who attend the overseas programmes under study leave.
Sources in UGC said, ‘The committee proposes a three-fold increase in the slab of existing ceiling of financial assistance. The proposal is to refurbish the slabs.’
They added, ‘Earlier, teachers getting scholarship in the range of $20,000 were not supposed to get any salary from the government. The slab has been proposed to be increased to $60,000.’ The second slab was for teachers receiving between $10,000 to 20,000. The slab might be changed to $30,000-60,000.
The third slab was for those who were receiving scholarship of less than $ 10,000. It will also be increased it to $30,000.
To fine-tune the guidelines, the committee has invited suggestions from scholars working in universities and colleges till 28 February, after which the proposal will be approved.
