University Grant Commission (UGC), in its move regarding gender-related issues in the universities, has constituted a 10-member task force. The decision was taken in the wake of the Delhi rape case.
UGC chairman Ved Parkash said, ‘The society has always treated the women with full dignity, history stands witness to this fact. Unfortunately, the spate of recent disturbing events in the national capital and in other parts of the country have necessitated the UGC to review the existing arrangements that have been put in place on the campuses of all our institutions of higher learning.’
Parkash said, ‘I have no doubt that we have set up an adulatory benchmark in this system. The UGC would strive for zero tolerance on harassment of any kind of girls and women on campuses.’
Later, he also said, ‘The task force will analyse and assess the arrangements for safety of women and youth in general. This will identify the shortcomings in the existing system. Task force will suggest how gender education and senitisation can be made an integral part of the university curriculum in all subject domains. and Task force will also suggest how awareness of gender sensitive issues be made an essential eligibility criterion in the future recruitment of university staff-both teaching as well as non-teaching.’
