Three Ugandan women on Tuesday reportedly told Delhi police that they were lured into sex trade by a placement agency on the pretext of giving them jobs. The women have alleged that several such agencies are active in the area.
‘On receipt of written complaint on Monday, south district police have registered a criminal case under the various sections of the Indian Penal Code,’ a Delhi police official said. Police also confirmed that the statements of the three Ugandan women, residents of Khirki Extension in Malviya Nagar, have been recorded.
The women registered a complaint with deputy commissioner (south and south-east) Nila Mohanan on Monday claiming that placement agencies that lure Ugandan women into sex and drug rackets are active in Delhi and the nearby areas.
Meanwhile, Delhi Commission for Women chairperson Barkha Singh, has written a letter to city police chief BS Bassi, asking him to depute more police officers and increase patrolling in Khirki Extension area to ensure that no women, particularly the women of foreign origin, are forced into prostitution or human trafficking.
Quoting the victims’ complaint, Singh said, ‘The Ugandan women were brought to India on the false pretext that they will be given good jobs in India by a man named Iron but when they reached Delhi they were forced to sleep with men. On their refusal to do so, they were beaten and threatened with dire consequences.’
‘On the basis of the statements and revelations about an accused, who according to the victims is an agent active and Delhi, a manhunt has been launched to trace him. The man is believed to have forced the women into prostitution. Legal action will be taken against all those persons who violate the law of land,’ the official added.
