Uber driver held in Noida for harassing female journalist

In another case of harassment by an Uber taxi driver, a female journalist has blamed assault and criminal force with intent to outrage her modesty in Noida on Wednesday night. The police have registered an FIR and have arrested the accused driver.

According to police, the accused driver has been identified as Ravinder Singh (30). He hails from Khanpur in South Delhi and has been sent to jail. “Acting on the complaint, we have lodged an FIR under Section 354 (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty) of the IPC and the accused driver has been arrested,” said a senior police official investigating the case. As per information, the complainant works with a leading publication in Gurgaon. “On Wednesday night, the complainant boarded an Uber cab from Gautam Nagar in Delhi to reach Noida’s Sector 15. Near Sector 15 Metro station, she realised that the driver was taking a wrong route. She complained about it and asked him to share the complaint number. The driver did not give her the complaint number,” the official further added.

The police said the driver entered into a heated argument with the victim. “The complainant asked the driver to stop the meter but he did not do so and argued that he would drop her at the destination. He did not give her the complaint number, however. Angry and agitated, the victim stepped out of the cab and the driver chased her. She called the control room and complained about the incident,” added the official.

The victim lodged her complaint with Sector 20 police station. On Thursday morning, the accused was arrested from Noida. “After his arrest, he was produced before the city court. The court has sent him to judicial custody. We are probing the case from all angles,” the official said. Notably, in December 2014, a 27-year-old woman was allegedly raped by driver Shiv Kumar Yadav of Uber.
