Uber driver held, gets bail

An FIR was registered against  him, charging him of molestation, at the Sector 56 police station in Gurgaon on late Monday night. He was taken into custody for interrogation on Tuesday morning. During interrogation, it emerged that Vinod is a resident of Shahbad Mohammadpur Village, which is located in Sector 21 of Dwarka sub-city in South-West Delhi, where he lives with his wife and daughter. He possesses a driving license issued by the transport authority of Delhi and owns a Swift Dzire car registered in Delhi. He had joined the Uber on May 4, 2015, said a police official.

Though he was not found to have any criminal record, the police are in the process of getting his documents – driving license, registration certificate, verification certificate and PSV badge. On Tuesday, the police recorded statements of both the accused and the woman separately after which the driver was produced before the court of Judicial Magistrate Iram Hassan, where he was granted bail. The woman, said that she had earlier sat on the back seat, but after crossing the Gurgaon toll on NH-8, she moved to the front seat. “The driver had started talking by then, which made me feel uncomfortable. I moved to the front seat because I felt that it was a safer option”, said the woman.

She further added: “I turned nervous when he started talking about the Uber case and claimed that he knew the accused, Shiv Kumar Yadav. He even claimed to have suggested Yadav to leave the city after the incident.” “Then suddenly he said that we had lost our way and I had to open GPS on my phone to navigate him. Then he asked me to send the GPS details to his phone,” said the woman. It took them around 2.5 hours to cover the approximately 38 Km distance. “When he finally reached around 11 pm, he handed me my bags which I kept on the back seat and kissed my hand. When I tried to escape, he held my hand and tried to approach my face. I had to force him away and run. By the time I told my friends about what had happened, he fled,” the woman added.

Delhi govt issues warning to Uber, Ola Cabs on licence issue
Taking a serious note after the recent molestation incident in Uber cap, Delhi Transport Minister Gopal Rai on Tuesday said the government will not consider applications for licence from app-based taxi operators Uber and Ola Cabs unless they comply with the existing ban imposed on them. The AAP government has decided to again write to the Centre to block the apps of these two taxi aggregators and take strict action against them for not complying with the ban order.

The government on May 28 had directed these Cabs to submit details of their drivers and vehicles if they wanted to “regularise” their services in the city, but according to the minister, they have “not turned up” so far. “We will not issue licences to Uber and Ola Cabs to operate their taxis in the capital unless they follow existing ban imposed by the city’s government. “<g data-gr-id="78">Out stand</g> is clear that both Uber and Ola Cabs have to comply with the ban order if they want their applications for a licence to be considered by the government,” Rai said.
