The IPL governing council met on Wednesday and decided the Sharjah stadium and Dubai international stadium will also host IPL matches. BCCI secretary Sanjay Patel said the UAE-leg will finish with Mumbai Indians-Sunrisers Hyderabad clash in Dubai on 30 April and would be conducted in India from the first week of May. The schedule of the remaining 40 matches will be announced in due course. ‘Pursuant to the initiative taken by the Home Ministry, many state governments have indicated IPL matches can be conducted in their respective states. Based on the responses received so far, BCCI believes IPL 2014 can be conducted in India from the first week of May,’ said Patel in a statement.
BCCI has been forced to shift the IPL for the second time as the second edition in 2009 was held in South Africa due to general elections. Bangladesh has also been kept as a stand-by if matches are not possible in India during May 1-12.
This is the second time the event has had to be forced out of the country due to elections. In 2009, the entire tournament had to be shifted to South Africa, a country which was in contention to host the event even this time.
