Two students ram bike into divider, killed

Two MBA students, including a north-eastern youth, died in a road accident on Sunday, when their motorcycle rammed into a roadside divider in Lajpat Nagar area. The speed of the motorcycle was so high that the pillion rider died on the spot while the other died on the way to hospital, said police.

The deceased were identified as Abhishek Shukla (23) and Yumnam Herojit (24). They both were second year students of a private institute in Noida and come to Delhi on Saturday evening to meet someone. While returning to their college, their motorcycle lost balance and rammed into a road side divider on the Ring Road in front of Nehru Nagar.

'We received the call at 9:10 pm. The injured youth were rushed to the hospital, where doctors declared them dead on arrival,' said a police officer. According to the witnesses, the accident took place due to over speeding of the bike. Police, however, are investigating the case from all angles, including the possibility of some other heavy vehicle hitting them.

Abhishek hails from Behraich and Yumnam from Manipur. They were batchmates and roommates too. They had borrowed the motorcycle from a friend, said the police.

Police have confiscated the motorcycle. Families of the deceased have been informed about the incident. Police officers have ruled out the possibility of drunken driving.

'We don't know who they were visiting in Lajpat Nagar. Both had left the college after classes on Saturday,' said one of the relatives of Yumnam. Both were sharing the hostel room for the last one-and-half-years and were good friends, he added.
