Two sisters injured as acid bottle bursts

Two sisters, Priti and Priyanka, received serious injuries after a plastic bottle containing acid came under a speeding car and burst right next to the girls in south east Delhi’s Govindpuri area on Monday night. The girls have since been admitted at city’s Safdurjung hospital with burn injuries resulting from the accident.

P Karunakaran,  deputy commissioner of police (south east ), said, ‘It appears to be a case of accident. The victims were coming from Lajpat Nagar to their residence in Govindpuri. The moment they got off the DTC bus at Govindpuri bus stand, they started walking towards their home. The girls, who were accompanied by their mother and walking past the public dustbin near Navjivan Camp next to the Hanuman temple in the area, spotted the bottle but threw it away thinking it contained plain water. Meanwhile, a car ran over the acid bottle lying on the ground, which burst from the impact. Drops of the acid got sprinkled on the duo.’

While the extent of injuries is yet to be clearly ascertained, how the bottle containing acid ended up at the dustbin remains to be established. The driver of the car is also at Safdurjung hospital with the girls’ family.
