Two North DMC engineers held from Jaipur in Micromax case

CBI on Tuesday arrested two engineers of North Delhi Municipal Corporation who had gone into hiding after the arrest of the  managing director of Micromax mobiles for allegedly paying bribe to civic body officials for giving clearance to his banquet hall.

CBI sources said superintendent engineer Rajesh Wadhwa and assistant engineer M K Gupta were arrested from a Jaipur hotel where they had allegedly been hiding.

On 7 August, CBI had carried out searches at 15 locations in connection with the bribery scandal, arresting the then managing director of Micromax mobiles, Rajesh Agarwal, along with bribe money of Rs 30 lakh which was allegedly meant for Wadhwa and other engineers and junior staff.

After the arrest, Agarwal stepped down as MD. ‘Rajesh Agarwal, co-founder, Micromax Informatics Limited has stepped down from his duties and excused himself from the responsibilities. He will focus on the legal proceedings to clear his name of the alleged charges,’ Micromax had said in a statement after the arrest. In the statement, the company clarified that Manish Tuli has no association with the company. ‘Rajesh Agarwal was present in his personal capacity with Manish Tuli,’ it said. It has been alleged that the engineers were being bribed to ensure clearance for the construction of a banquet hall in the Wazirpur area. After catching Agarwal, Manish Tuli and two officials of the north civic body ‘red-handed’, CBI teams carried out searches in which they had recovered cash worth Rs 74 lakh.
