Two more arrested for last month’s rape of 13-yr-old

Two more of the eight men who allegedly gang raped a 13-year-old girl here last month have been arrested, taking the total number of those arrested in the case to five, police said on Sunday. The girl, who attempted suicide on Saturday, is stated to be stable, though still in hospital. 'We have arrested two people in the case,' a police officer said but refused to divulge any more information. Three people were arrested on Saturday, police said.

Meanwhile, the victim's mother said that her 'condition was stable and she has started to talk a little'.

The girl, who was abducted on 15 March by the men and released after nine days, took an overdose of sleeping pills on Saturday morning at her house in the Farsh Bazar area of east Delhi.

She was admitted to the Hedgewar Hospital in east Delhi. The victim's family had complained of police apathy in the case.

Police swung into action on the orders of the Karkardooma court, which the family approached on 9 April after police reportedly took no action on their complaint.

The 13-year-old victim and her 12-year-old brother were abducted by two men known to her on 15 March  from outside her house and taken to Loni, on the outskirts of the city. There, six accomplices of the two who had abducted the children, joined them and raped the girl in a house, a police officer said. The boy was released the next day. Police arrested three accused - Deepak (21), Ranjeet (20) and Sohan Lal (24) - Saturday, following medical examination of the victim on 15 April. The incident comes even as the capital is witnessing outrage over the rape of a five-year-old girl whose family has alleged that Delhi police tried to bribe them with Rs.2,000 to hush up the case. Three Delhi police officials, including an assistant commissioner of police, have been suspended for failing to act promptly in the rape case or for behaving improperly with protesters.
