Two militants killed in Pulwama encounter

Security forces launched a search and cordon operation in the Newa area of Pulwama district, following information about presence of militants in the area, a police official said.

He said the militants, hiding in a house, were asked to surrender, but they opened fire on the security forces. The security forces retaliated, which resulted in the killing of two militants. 

Two security personnel were injured in the operation, the official said, adding that the identity and group affiliation of the slain militants was being ascertained. As the security forces were engaged in the operation, a group of residents started pelting stones at them.

The forces fired in the air to disperse the mob, in which four civilians were injured, he said. The situation in the area is tense but under control, he added.
