Two metro stations closed to prevent protests at Karbala

Two metro stations, INA and Jor Bagh, from 10.45 am to 6.18 pm as a preventive measure against protestors from some religious group that were to hold a demonstration in Karbala ground. The Delhi police ordered the DMRC to shut the two stations for public services.

Protesters belonging to Shia sect of Muslim community today staged demonstration at several places against acquisition of Karbala land in Jor Bagh area of city, throwing traffic out of gear in parts of East and South Delhi and prompting authorities to close two metro stations.

The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) spokesman said that on the advice of Delhi police Jor Bagh and INA metro stations were closed for passenger services at 10.45 am, owing to security concerns. Services resumed at 6.18 pm.

Passengers also faced inconveniences and complained that these closures and glitches have become commonplace in the Metro. Although, this was a security concern, commuters have argued that they had to face inconveniences due to the closing of metro stations.

Sridhar Vignesh, a financial analyst said, ‘I got down at AIIMS as I was not aware of the closing of the stations. I had to walk down all the way to INA market.’

‘This has become a common place with the Delhi metro. Every now and then the commuters find themselves at receiving end’, he added.

Defending the move, a police officer said that it was a preventive measure to maintain law and order in the area. ‘We are aware that the passengers had to face some inconvenience but it was necessary for maintaining the law and order in the area.’

Police resorted to use of mild force on demonstrators, who tried to march towards the residence of Congress president Sonia Gandhi from Jor Bagh in Central Delhi.

Traffic police had closed both carriage ways of NH 24 from Gazipur fly over to Uttar Pradesh border for all types of vehicles since morning as the protesters were supposed to come into the national capital through it.

Traffic jams were witnessed on roads connecting Noida to Delhi and on those connecting South Delhi to Central Delhi. However, the traffic could be normalised only by evening.

This morning, scores of people, who came in 10 buses from UP, were initially stopped at Gazipur Border. ‘We initially didn’t allow some persons, who belonged to minority community, to enter Delhi. They wanted to enter Delhi for offering ‘namaz’ but later they were allowed to enter,’ said a senior UP police officer. The protests continued till 5 pm, police said.
