Two landfill sites to come up under Clean Noida drive; deadline for tenders extended

The authority, which is reeling under pressure for not maintaining the disposal of nearly 400 tonnes of garbage daily, has decided to clean up the region by dumping the garbage at the outskirts.

Notably, thousands of industrial units along with residential units produce large quantities of garbage daily, but there is no landfill site to dispose them off.

As per report, the first site will come up in Sector 123 in Noida while the second one will be constructed in Greater Noida. The authority, having floated tenders about four months back, has said that three companies have been finalised but the date of the tender has been extended up to March end to attract more companies.

The authority is eyeing at least four companies for the smooth running of the Clean Noida campaign.

It has estimated expenditure of Rs 100 crore per year up on both the sites, which will be borne by the authority itself. “With the increase in population in the area, the quantity of garbage is also increasing. The need of the hour is to make the city clean, by ensuring proper disposal of garbage,” said an authority official.

As the city has no landfill site to dispose of its daily garbage, it dumps all its garbage in Sector 80 and 81 (not the official land-filling sites). The authority is facing a few hurdles in giving the city a face-lift. The companies have not shown much interest in joining the Clean Noida campaign. The authority has had to extend the deadline for the bidding process twice.

“The number of companies finalised is not enough. We need to rope in more. Some of the companies did not qualify. We have extended the deadline for re-tendering,” said the official.

The Clean Noida campaign has been divided into three parts — door to door pick-up of garbage, mechanised-cleaning and sweeping of vehicles on six identified roads and generation of power from waste by setting up a plant in Greater Noida.

“We are making all possible efforts to make the mission successful. The motive behind the campaign is to give Noida an image makeover. It has become a major city for top IT and real-estate companies,” added the official.
