Two die in Tahirpur building collapse

Two persons, including a nine-year-old girl, were killed while three persons sustained injuries after a two -storey building in Tahirpur area of north-east Delhi collapsed on Wednesday. Till the last input came in, four people were reported to be trapped under the debris.
The Fire department received the call at 4.10 pm. Immediately, a few fire tenders were rushed to the spot. The building was just a few meters away from the Tiharpur fire station in Dilshad Garden.
According to an official, five persons have been rescued from the debris so far. ‘Of the five persons, Sapna, 9, and Veerpal, 24, were declared dead on arrival when they were rushed to the nearby Guru Teg Bahadur hospital. The three other persons, identified as Rajkumari, 12, Shashi, 15 and Babu, 17, are undergoing treatment,’ he said.
There were three shops on the ground floor, and on the first floor, a family of five members lived. Since Sunday, a drain was being constructed a meter away from the building. On Wednesday, around 15 feets of the drain was constructed with the help of JCB machine.
‘In the initial investigation, the reason behind the building collapse is assumed to be the construction of the drain. There is a possibility that the construction might have weakened the roots of the old building, which in turn led to the collapse,’ the official added.
During the incident, three labourers were working in the building and they are still trapped under the debris. The rescue operation to take them out is under process.
The official said, ‘Fortunately, all the three shops were closed for the last three days due to the construction going on in front of the shops. Otherwise, the toll would have been much higher.’
‘The owner of the building has been identified as Bijender. He had given the building on rent and is now absconding,’ the official said.
