Investigation of the case is on to ascertain whether it was suicide, murder or natural.
Shashi Tharoor was present in suite number 345 of The Leela Palace in Chanakyapuri when Sunanda’s body was discovered sprawled on the bed. On Thursday, the couple checked into the hotel. ‘No PCR call was received. An IPS officer made a call to the SHO of local police station stating that Sunanda’s body was lying on the bed in her hotel room. After the call, the cops rushed to the crime scene,’ a senior police official said.
At around 8.45 pm, Tharoor made a call to his personal secretary Abhinav and instructed him to come to his hotel. ‘At 9 pm, I reached the hotel and found Sunanda lying on the bed, wearing her night clothes. I made a call to the hotel doctor, who then declared her dead. I also called up the SHO,’ Abhinav said.
Speaking to Millennium Post, Deepak Mishra, special police commissioner said, ‘No suicide note has been recovered from her possession. Prima facie evidence suggests she might have died due to heart attack.’ The post-mortem report is due, he added. A forensic team along with senior police officials visited the spot to collect evidence. ‘The CCTV footages are being looked into,’ Mishra said.
On Thursday, Sunanda kept on tweeting and her last tweet was seen at 6 am on Friday morning that says: ‘Jaaungi toh khushi khushi jaaungi’.
Meanwhile, Mehr Tarar, the Pakistani journalist in the eye of the storm, tweeted: ‘I just woke up and read this. I’m absolutely shocked. This is too awful for words. So tragic I don’t know what to say. Rest in peace,Sunanda.’ Ishaan Tharoor, the minister’s son, said on Twitter: ‘I would request that everyone please respect our family’s privacy at this moment.’ Condolences poured in from political fraternity with Kapil Sibal saying, ‘Deeply shocked to hear about Sunanda,’ and Nirmala Sitharaman, BJP spokesperson, tweeting: ‘Her individuality was striking. Condolences to the family.’
Meanwhile, former diplomat TP Sreenivasan said Sunanda was ill. ‘She had undergone treatment in France recently and after check-ups it was found that she had some serious health issues and he (Tharoor) was a worried man. I pacified him after hearing it,’ he said. Reports said the couple had visited a leading private hospital recently and certain tests were conducted on Pushkar.
