Two B.Tech students, aged between 20 and 23 years, died after drowning in a swimming pool under mysterious circumstances in Ghaziabad on Wednesday. Police said that the victims, both students of a private engineering college, had gone to the swimming pool along with their colleagues on Tuesday.
They were immeditely taken to a hospital in the national Capital where both died after a few hours of treatment. Notably, regular visitors at the pool claimed that there was no trainer or lifeguard present when the both drowned.
Police said that the victims, identified as Prateek Singhal and Utkarsh Arya, both fourth year students of AKG Engineering College in Ghaziabad, along with their college friends, had gone for swimming at Recreation Club in Chandra Nagar area on Tuesday evening.
During the swim, their friends saw them drowning into the water. After the both failed to appear for a long time, their friends took them out of the pool. As both were in an unconscious state, they were admitted in ICU of a private hospital in Anand Vihar but they succumbed later.
The police said they were yet to receive a complaint in the matter. ‘Though there is no official complaint so far, we are looking into the matter. There was water in their lungs, which occurs only when a person drowns. We have sent the bodies for postmortem and have decided to preserve the viscera. We will also look into the medical history to see if there is anything which could have caused their deaths,’ said a senior police official.
Meanwhile, the friends of the deceased blamed the absense of trainers and lack of safety equipment in the swimming pool. They said that the tragedy could be averted if they had been rescued immediately after the incident.
