Two boys buried alive while collecting clay for Janmashtami

Two teenage boys died of suffocation after they fell into a pit with four others and got buried under a huge heap of sand at New Ashok Nagar in east Delhi on Saturday afternoon. All of them had gone to the accident spot to collect clay to make statues for the occasion of Janmashtami.

The incident was reported to the police by the locals around 1.30 pm. Police rushed to the spot immediately and helped the locals in successfully rescuing four victims, but they couldn’t save the other two. On Saturday afternoon, about a dozen teenagers had gone to collect clay from the tunnel
that lies adjacent to the Dharmashila Cancer Hospital and Research Centre, said a source.

The deceased teenagers, Vineet (16) and Ashok (15), were part of the group looking for wet sand for making statues to be sold in Janmashtami. ‘When they started digging up the base of the heap, a pit was created. Suddenly, a few of them fell into the pit and the entire heap of sand crashed over them,’ said a police official. He further said that the others in the group ran towards the main road and started calling for help.

The locals managed to drag out all six of them, but two of them – Vineet and Ashok — were found dead. They were rushed to the Lal Bahadur Shastri Hospital, where they were declared brought dead, said the police official. The bodies were sent for post-mortem, the official added.
