International Dance Day, also known as World Dance Day, is celebrated through promotion by the International Dance Council (CID). The day was introduced in 1982 by the International Dance Committee of the UNESCO International Theatre Institute. The date was chosen to commemorate the birthday of Jean-Georges Noverre, who was born in 1727, a French dancer and ballet master and a great reformer of dance.

For over a decade, every World dance day, Dancer Geeta Chandran’s celebrations have acquired legendary status. Each year’s celebrations are planned differently, and this year too, a heady mix awaits audiences. The celebration will start on April 25 with Natya Vriksha, presented by (Padmashri) Geeta Chandran’s 40 Years of Dance, celebration of World Dance Day 2015.  Day one will include Launch of renowned dance critic Leela Venkataraman’s book Indian Classical Dance: The Renaissance and Beyond published by Niyogi Books. It will be followed by Navadarshanam Performance of group choreographies by Seniors Dancers of Natya Vriksha Dance Company (Sneha Chakradhar, Divya Saluja, Sharanya Chandran, R. Amritha Sruthi and Radhika Kathal.

Screening of international film Vara, Directed by renowned international filmmaker (Rinpoche) Khyentse Norbu from Bhutan will also be arranged. In the film dancer Geeta Chandran plays the role of a devadasi and her students too have acted in the movie.

Day two (April 26) will see Dharohar Bharatanatyam Performance by natya viksha dance company next. Rasa in Dance – Inspiration and Imagination, an illustrated talk by Guru Lakshmi Vishwanathan (Chennai) will follow. The talk will progress from theory to practice, exploring and drawing inspiration from parallels in Art. Lakshmi will take the Rasikas on a journey of imagined and real beauty. There will also be Kuchipudi Performance by T. Reddi Lakshmi (Disciple of Gurus Jayarama Rao and Vanashree Rao) and   Kathak performance by Vishal Krishna of Benares.

The annually observed World Dance Day should increase the awareness of the importance of dance among the general public. Its goal is also to persuade governments all over the world to provide a proper place for dance in all systems of education. Around the world, there are events on World Dance Day, such as open-door-courses, exhibitions, articles concerning all kinds of dance, dance evenings, street shows, and special performances, etc.

Above this, every year a message from a well known dance personality is circulated throughout the world. The CID is a non-profit umbrella organization for all forms of dance in the world. It was founded in 1973 within the UNESCO headquarters and has its headquarters in Paris, France. CID advises the UNESCO, national and local government agencies, international organizations and institutions. Currently it is represented in over 120 countries.
