Turmoil in Goa over next CM

Following the decision to elevate Goa chief minister Manohar Parrikar to the union cabinet, a political turmoil has started in the state BJP as deputy chief minister Francis D’Souza has threatened to resign if he is not promoted as Parrikar’s replacement.

D’Souza’s ‘out of the party line’ statement came after names of health minister Laxmikant Parsekar and state’s Speaker Rajendra Arlekar, with strong Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) backing, started to emerge as strong contenders for the post of CM.

‘It’s Chief Minister or nothing for me. I am not claiming for the post because I am a minority leader. I am claiming it because I am number two in the cabinet and I should be automatically elevated to number one,’ a visibly annoyed D’Souza told media persons.

While claiming to have backing of 10 MLAs and six cabinet ministers, he said, ‘The incumbent CM has promised to take care of me and now it is the time for him to prove it. I am a four-time MLA, three-time minister, an eligible candidate. Party should prove that they care for the minorities.’
