A Patiala House court, in an in-camera proceeding, sent Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) bomb expert Abdul Karim Tunda to four-day police custody on Tuesday, the day on which his earlier three-day police remand ended. The court remanded him to police custody to interrogate him in connection with 37 bomb blasts across the country.
Tunda, while being brought to the court by the cops, was attacked by some activists of the Hindu Sena. Also, when the matter was being heard in the court, the proceedings were disrupted in the court room. Later, the court decided to hold in-camera proceedings.
When the matter was being heard before metropolitan magistrate Jay Thareja, Tunda was asked who will represent him and Tunda said he did not have money to hire a lawyer.
Some advocates volunteered to represent him. Later, advocate MS Khan represented him before
the court.
Khan later told reporters Tunda was remanded to four-day police custody, while the Delhi police had sought 10-day police remand for taking him to three different places outside Delhi for probing his links with various terror outfits.
Police said Tunda was a proclaimed offender in a case of recovery of explosive substances lodged in 1994 at Malviya Nagar police station under the provisions of TADA. Police, while seeking extension of remand, said that in 1994, Tunda had left India and during 1996-97, 37 bomb blasts took place in north India, including New Delhi, Varanasi and Kanpur.
Sources said that police told the court that Tunda had played a vital role in the conspiracy behind the blasts. It said that Tunda was providing logistic supports to these terrorists who were executing the bomb blasts in north India. It said that it was collecting the FIRs lodged against Tunda in different states and during the police custody, police will take him to three places to gather evidence. It said that his sustained custodial interrogation will help them in unearthing the module of other banned outfits which are active in India.
Khan told reporters that Tunda told the court that he was innocent and had not motivated anyone to kill women and children by exploding bombs. Khan said that Tunda claimed in the court that he used to teach others the true meaning of Jehad which bars any kind of violence.
