Tryst with good monsoon may spell relief for farmers

There is some good news for the beleaguered Indian economy as the met department has promised near perfect monsoon this year. This comes as a huge relief for the farmers who are battling drought in several parts of the country. Science and Technology Minister S Jaipal Reddy on Friday said that India’s monsoon is likely to be normal with 98 per cent rainfall expected.

‘Most likely this year’s monsoon is expected to be within the normal range. The monsoon rainfall is related to crop production in the country and also has significant impact on economy. The good news for farmers is that the southwest monsoon this year is most likely to be normal,’ said Reddy.

‘All prediction models show that monsoon will be normal. By and large, the drought-hit areas of Maharashtra, Gujarat and Karnataka are likely to get normal rain,’ added the minister. ‘Monsoon is likely to be 98 per cent of the long period average (1951-2000),’ he added.
