Transport department cracks whip on errant auto drivers

Delhi transport minister Ramakant Goswami on Monday called a high-level meeting of all stakeholders, including the Delhi police and enforcement wing of the transport department, at the Delhi Secretariat to discuss the improvement of auto rickshaw services.

Members of various auto rickshaw unions in the national capital were also present at the meeting.

Taking into account the increasing number of commuter complaints about overcharging by auto drivers, the minister said that the department wants them to run strictly by the meter or else face penalty.

In case of non-compliance, the concerned authority will take punitive action against errant drivers. The nature of complaints could vary from drivers refusing passengers to overcharging, bad behavior or harassment. Drivers are expected to be courteous with commuters and must stop refusing passengers.

Goswami further said that enforcement officials of the transport department and the traffic police department will also ensure that TSRs at the airport and railway stations operate only under the prepaid service allotted to them.

In another step to curb fleecing by auto drivers, the Delhi traffic police will issue stickers to drivers that will contain two dedicated complaint numbers where the aggrieved commuters could register their complaints.

The department also plans to launch a special drive from next week to prosecute auto-rickshaw drivers fleecing commuters.
