In a high level meeting on Friday, chaired by Najeeb Jung, and Union Minister for Science and Technology and Earth Sciences Harsh Vardhan, who is also a local MP, Mangu Singh, managing director of DMRC presented a blue print of the ambitious project. “The feasibility study of the project shows that the ridership of the proposed tram will be one lakh passengers per day”, said Singh during his presentation.
The DMRC hopes to complete the entire project in three years time.
The proposed 4.55 km route would connect the inner areas of the walled city with Red Fort. A tram would take 15 minutes to complete the entire journey in the Chandni Chowk area. “A total of six trams with two coaches, and a capacity to carry 200 passengers will run in this loop, three in one direction,” added Singh.
The ground work for the project has already started with the removal of water and sewer lines, transformers, and other structures including police posts falling in the proposed route. The officials believe the tram will go a long way in decongesting the area.
Besides tram project the L-G and Vardhan also reviewed redevelopment of Chandni Chowk and Jama Masjid precincts projects.
In the meeting Vardhan assured that he would lend all support to resolve matters pertaining to parking and encroachments and will hold meetings with the residents along with the officials to find speedy solution to these issues. He also directed the officers to complete the all ongoing
projects on time.
