Traffic violators paid Rs 62 crore as penalty

With the motto ‘Be safe’, the Delhi traffic police have tightened the noose around errant motorists and have earned a revenue of Rs 62 crore in 2013 by issuing around 41 lakh challans compared to year 2012 when only 36 lakh challans were issued and around Rs 52 crore was earned.

‘Police have launched a special drive against the drunk drivers and improver parking among other traffic rule violations. About 24,564 motorists were prosecuted for drunk driving as compared to 23,829 motorists for the offence in year 2012,’ said Delhi police commissioner Bhim Sain Bassi.
The traffic police said that special drives have played an important role in nabbing the offenders.

The top traffic violations include 9.79 lakh challans for jumping traffic signals, 7.10 lakh for improper parking, 5.70 lakh challans against two-wheelers for not wearing helmets, 3.82 lakh against the motorists not wearing seatbelts, 2.02 lakh for motorists indulging in driving dangerously, 1.51 lakh for violating the one-way roads, 1.19 lakh for defective number plates, 1.02 lakh for tinted glasses, 71,000 for crossing the stop line and 51,000 for vehicle without headlight or tail light.

‘The city traffic police have been doing their best to keep the commuters safe. Also we have been keeping a close eye on traffic offenders. With such a huge number of challans, people can understand that police are working hard to control traffic offences,’ said a senior traffic police official on the condition of anonymity.

‘Our aim is to educate the people to follow the traffic rules. As you can see through the data that we are committed to do our work with efficiency. We have even higher targets for the current year against the traffic violators,’ said a senior traffic police official.
