Traffic severely hit due to IITF, major roads choked

Severe traffic jams on Friday evening crippled major roads in the national Capital. The congestions started from central Delhi where all approach roads towards ITO were in a chock-a-block situation.

However, the road near Pragati Maidan, where Delhi Traffic Police had taken stern measures keeping in view the India International Trade Fair, was relatively clear. It didn’t last long, and by late evening, traffic jams near Connaught Place, India Gate, ITO, Pragati Maidan, Nehru Place and
Dhaula Kuan threw commuters out-of-gear.

‘I had started from Mandi House at 4.45 pm and it took me more than 30 minutes to reach ITO, which is hardly two kilometres from there,’ said Rajat Atri, a bank employee driving towards Vikas Marg through the ITO junction. He further said, ‘I saw around eight traffic police officials near ITO but the situation there just threw them out-of-gear.’

According to a traffic official, commuters approaching towards ITO on Friday wanted to avoid the Mathura Road stretch that passes through Pragati Maidan, so they opted for alternative routes, leading to traffic snarls there. But by 5.30 pm, things had changed near Pragati Maidan and there was bumper-to-bumper traffic witnessed in the concerned Mathura Road stretch too.
