Traffic Police move to curb fatal accidents in Delhi

Heavy and medium goods vehicles can now enter the city only after 10 pm instead of 9.30 pm and would not be allowed to run in the capital after 7 am, said Anil Shukla, joint commissioner of police (traffic). He further said, duty of traffic police has also been extended till 4 am, which earlier ended at 9 pm.

The new plan also includes: Introduction of new interceptors with night vision facilities, augmentation of towing/lifting/hauling equipment, introduction of traffic signals, blinkers and auditory signals, introduction of gantry-mounted speed-check (day/night) cameras at vulnerable locations, installation of variable message sign boards, and integration and augmentation of Traffic Control Centre, said Shukla.

Also, Union government is planning to establish the National Road Safety and Traffic Management Board by end of this year. ‘The board will help in the development and regulation of road safety, traffic management system and safety standards in highway design and construction,’ said Vijay Chibber, secretary of the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH).

They were speaking at a seminar on ‘Road Safety During Dark Hours’ organised jointly by the MoRTH and International Road Federation in New Delhi on Saturday.
