Police then set up barricades at Ashoka Road to stop the protesters but they tried to break in. Later, all of them were taken to the Parliament Street police station and detained there, said a senior police officer.
Though the drama was over in less than one hour, it crippled New Delhi roads for several hours throwing traffic out-of-gear. The area that was first hit by the chaos was the C-Hexagon near the India Gate. This was followed by severe traffic snarls on Akbar Road, KG Marg, Copernicus Marg, Tilak Marg, Shahjahan Road, Pandara Road, Shershah Road and Purana Quila Road (both linked to the Mathura Road).
It was a bad day for railway commuters as all major roads leading to the New Delhi Railway Station were clogged with vehicles, witnessing a bumper-to-bumper traffic.
In a short while, the effect was visible at the outer and inner circles of Connaught Place. Even the traffic officials deployed there couldn’t tackle the situation. Traffic officials had a similar experience at the ITO junction and in no time major roads like Sikandra Road, Bahadur Shah Zafar Marg, Deen Dayal Upadhaya Marg, Indraprastha Road and Methura Road stretch near Pragati Maidan were in a choke-a-block situation.
The situation came under control after the rush evening hours were over, said a traffic official.
The Youth Congress activists had first assembled at their office where an event was organised to mark the appointment of their new president Amrinder Singh Raja Brar. From there they headed for the BJP’s office at Ashoka Road with no prior notification to the local police. Police even had to use mild force to control the situation.
