Traffic goes out of gear in south Delhi on Durga Puja

A traffic police official manning the intersection at CR Park in south Delhi said it was a routine exercise every year. ‘What can we do? It’s Durga Puja and it happens every year. This is out of our hands’, he argued.

The traffic mess in Delhi, especially in southern part can be attributed to poor traffic management in the area. While some of the congestions was due to the barricading around CR Park, on many other places there were no traffic personnel to manage the situation.

Commuters at theAshram Chowk had the most harrowing experience owing to the maintenance work on the flyover there. ‘I started from Pragati Maidan at six in the evening, took the Mathura Road, and by the time I reached the turn towards the Modi Mills, it was already 7.15 pm,’ said a commuter who got late for his evening shift office.

The other end of the Modi Mill flyover was also cramped by huge traffic, approaching from Kalkaji temple. The commuters there had already been stuck in jam for hours. The situation was further worsened by illegally parked vehicles on the road around Kalkaji temple. ‘The big shock was that not a single traffic official could be seen near the Kalkaji – Modi Mill stretch. Do they only work when the Prime Minister goes for a ride’, questioned another commuter who was stuck at Outer Ring Road for two hours. At Ashram Chowk, the situation could not be controlled despite four traffic police officers working in three shifts there.

Meanwhile, the break down of DTC buses also added to the woes of commuters.  Around half a dozen DTC buses were reported to have broken down at major stretches, which were not taken care of  by authorities on time. Three DTC buses broke down near the AIIMS stand and it took the authorities hours to tow the vehicles.  A water seller who at the bus stand said that the buses weren’t removed till the evening. Similar incidents were reported from Sukhdev Vihar and other parts of south Delhi.
