Traffic congestions were reported from places around all the 33 ghats in East Delhi. Both the crowd
and traffic were efficiently managed by the officials deployed there, claimed a traffic official.
The congregation of the devotees – most of whom arrived on bicycles, cycle rickshaws, tempos, trucks and buses, affected traffic at Vikas Marg, ITO, Kashmere Gate ISBT, NH-24, the Delhi-Noida-Delhi flyway, Burari Chowk, Nizamuddin bridge, Akshardham temple and Gandhi Nagar.
Though, police was deployed in huge numbers to control the crowd, the surge of devotees caught them unawares. ‘Around 15 thousand devotees flocked to the banks of Yamuna between the Akshardham temple and ITO-Chungi alone. There was an increase of at least 10 per cent from previous year,’’ said a senior police officer.
‘At 5 pm, I was stuck at one point for almost half an hour near Kalyanpuri in east Delhi. There were around three traffic officials in the area and they were facing a hard time managing the traffic due to Chhath festival,’ said a commuter who was heading towards Kondli. All vehicles towards the Agra Canal road were be diverted from Jaitpur road to Lakkad market.
