Traffic cop shot at for trying to stop helmet-less bikers

A traffic constable escaped unhurt, after being shot at,  when he tried to stop three persons for not wearing helmets while riding on a motorcycle on Wednesday evening, police said.

'The incident happened in the Preet Vihar area of east Delhi. A traffic constable, Monu, was manning a traffic signal when he saw the motorcyclists were not wearing helmets. When he tried to stop them, they sped away,' said a police officer. 'After a few minutes, the bikers returned and opened fire on Monu, who however escaped unhurt,' an officer said.  Police officials said, they have launched a hunt to nab the culprits and have registered a case of attempt to murder.

In another incident, around 150 people gathered and blocked the road in Kalindi Kunj area on Wednesday evening, when a traffic police fined a south Delhi MLA’s relative Rs. 100, again for not wearing a helmet. 'The accused was riding without a helmet, so as per the rules we had to fine him,' said joint commissioner (Traffic), Anil Shukla. The accused was travelling from the Kalindi Kunj area to Shahin Bagh, where he was caught at the red signal.

A witness said, protestors threatened the traffic police, and also took him by the collar for fining the MLA’s relative. However, Shukla denied it saying they blocked the road near the Kalindi Kunj traffic signal for an hour, leading to heavy traffic chaos in the evening. 'A case has been registered against those who  blocked the road, and police is further investing the matter,' said an official.
