The traffic movement between Ashram Chowk in the national Capital to the Film City in Noida was completely paralysed, to the extent of further traffic being diverted via the Mayur Vihar toll plaza.
All vehicles were stuck and it took around two to three hours to cover the 7.5 kilometre stretch. The chaos also led to scuffles between the commuters, who lost their cool, given the sorry state of traffic affairs.
Around 10:30 am, nearly a thousand workers of the ruling party reached the plaza in over 250 motor cars. They parked their vehicles at the Delhi-Noida toll gate and its vicinity, waiting for the district president for nearly two hours.
In the meantime, traffic movement went from slow to stagnant. The party workers clearly did not
care for the traffic police or the traffic marshal deployed by the DND authority. When the leader finally reached the plaza, the situation turned more chaotic and ended only after he left from the carriageway.
Noticing the unprecedented jam, the toll authority forced motorists to use the Mayur Vihar link road of the DND. However, the effort of the authorities went mostly in vein as the police along with the DND staff took almost three hours to resume normalcy in traffic flow.
Speaking on the issue, the SP leaders said that though they were concerned about the resulting chaos, they nevertheless wanted to greet the Minister while crossing the border of Delhi. “As DND falls near the Delhi-Noida border, we did not have a choice but to gather at the plaza. We had informed the DND operator and traffic police earlier about this and it was their duty to make the necessary arrangements to avoid chaos,” stated a local leader of the Samajwadi Party. Notably, this is not the first time when SP members have jammed the DND – earlier in December, last year and January this year, they had similarly blocked the stretch, while welcoming UP ministers.
