Torrential rains lash capital

Record-breaking rains and hailstorm lashed the national capital on Friday affecting traffic in many areas of the city besides plunging mercury downwards.

While 33.5 mm rainfall was recorded in 36 hours, the city had 21 mm rainfall in last 24 hours ending at 8.30 am, which is a record downpour since 2003 when a total of 15.6 mm of rain was recorded in January.

The maximum temperature was recorded at 16.4 deg C, four notches below the normal and down from previous days 20.8 deg C, the MeT office said.

Heavy rains and hailstorm threw the life out of gear as many parts of the city witnessed traffic jams. There was also water-logging at many places.

Vehicular movement was affected in several areas including ITO, Vikas Marg and South Extension. Many parts of the city were also left without power supply.

The showers, which started around 11 pm on Thursday, continued throughout the day. However, the cloud cover resulted in slight rise in the minimum temperature.

Today’s minimum was recorded at 11.3 degrees celsius, four notches above normal and up from yesterday’s 9.7 degrees celsius.

The Weatherman has predicted mainly clear sky for Saturday with fog in the morning. The minimum and maximum temperatures will be around 16 and seven degree Celsius respectively, it said.
