To lure Dalits from Maya’s fold, Rahul uses escape velocity

Speaking at the National Conference on Dalit Adhikar Diwas organised by All India Valmiki Federation, Gandhi scion took on Dalit leader and former chief minister of Uttar Pradesh Mayawati saying she was to be faulted for not providing space to other leaders from the community. ‘Mayawati doesn’t let others go forward in this movement. Mayawati also played a role but it (empowerment of Dalits) can’t be done by one leader alone,’ Rahul said.

‘One or two Dalit leaders cannot galvanise a movement; we need lakhs of Dalit leaders for it to progress. Congress party is the voice of India, we want people from Dalit community as MPs and MLAs, we want everyone to participate,’ said the Congress leader.

Addressing two separate functions in the capital on the empowerment of Dalits, Rahul Gandhi attacked the Opposition, saying they would lose the 2014 elections as they had ignored the Dalits, never bothered to go to their homes or ‘hold their hands and understand their problems.’

Speaking at the Vigyan Bhawan, he said, ‘In India, we have a concept of caste. If one belongs to a backward caste and wants to attain success then one needs an escape velocity to attain that success. Dalits in this country need the escape velocity of Jupiter to attain success.’

At Talkatora Stadium, Gandhi described Dalits as the ‘reed ki haddi’ or spine of the Congress. ‘The more representation you give them in the Congress party, the better. These people are the spine of the Congress,’ said Gandhi.

To loud cheers of ‘Rahul Gandhi zindabad’, ‘Rahul Gandhi is the messiah of the downtrodden’ and ‘India’s rising star’, Gandhi said the Congress party would do everything to empower Dalits.
